We welcome writers, artists, performers, poets, and daydreamers from anywhere in the world, from any background, and from any experience level to submit for upcoming issues, special publications, and the MockingOwl Roost blog. 

The MockingOwl Roost is a literary magazine founded by Rita Mock-Pike, Annali Carmel, and Soren Porter. Rita, a journalist, copywriter, and cookbook author by trade, saw a gap in the publishing industry where her award-winning journalist friends couldn’t get essays published simply because they didn’t “fit” in somewhere.

 Having relished a life of not fitting in for some 38-odd years, Rita went to Soren and Annali and said, “Here’s a thing we need to do.”

Response times: Submissions during the reading period will be reviewed and responded to within ten days of the submission period closing.

Themes: For the quarterly issue, we nearly exclusively publish works that meet the theme. However, we may determine that the piece works for a future issue or may be publishable for the blog or in an upcoming special issue.

Makena Metz writes for the page, screen, and stage. She has an MFA in Creative Writing and MA in English from Chapman University and is a proud member of DGA, ASCAP, WIA, Maestra, and the SCL. Makena’s work has been published with Wordgathering, the Literary Hatchet, The Fantastic Other, The Bitchin’ Kitsch, Strange Horizons, Arkana, and many others.
