A Nieman Fellowship is an extraordinary, transformative learning opportunity open to journalists working in all media in every country around the world. About two dozen candidates annually are awarded paid fellowships to spend an academic year at Harvard, where they audit classes taught by some of the university’s greatest thinkers, participate in Nieman events, and collaborate with peers. The residency provides dedicated time, space, and mentorship to explore a new concept and create a new piece of artistic or cultural work. 

Art Connect Residency offers four creatives dedicated time, space and mentorship at an independent cultural centre in eastern Slovakia. The two objectives of the residency are to explore – to conduct artistic research, investigate and work on a specific theme or new concept – and to create – to engage in a creative process leading to a new piece of artistic or cultural work.<div><br></div><div>Residents work independently and in dialogue with the local environment and with our team, and The residency concludes with a public presentation (e.g., exhibition, reading, discussion) to share the process with local audiences. Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency

At the Château de Lavigny, we know that, more than anything, time is what writers need. Thanks to the generous initiative of our founder Jane Ledig-Rowohlt, over the past 30 years we have been able to offer that rare gift to more than 700 poets, novelists and writers, working in all forms and genres. <div><br></div><div>The writer and literary translator’s residence is open from May to October and is able to host a maximum of six writers per session. To be eligible writers and literary translators must be published (min. one book - self published not accepted), playwrights and scriptwriters must be published or produced.</div><div><br></div><div>The writers are provided with a private room in the Chateau.  </div><div><br></div><div>The residents are responsible for buying and preparing their own meals. In the evening, an aperitif is offered by the management to the residents to allow them to get together and chat. Once a week a dinner is prepared and offered by the management.          </div><div><br></div><div>Residents are left in peace to work and can plan their time as they wish. One public reading is organized every session where residents present their work. Each session lasts four weeks.</div><div><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>

The Black Writers Fellowship: Researcher is offered annually to a Black writer who proposes a research topic relevant to hand papermaking and indicates an ongoing investment in research and inquiry in the field. The article will be long-form and eligible for publication in Hand Papermaking magazine, Summer 2028 issue. <div><br></div><div>The Researcher will receive a $1,000 award and a fellowship stipend of up to $1,000 for expenses incurred, including but not limited to research travel, resources, transcription or translation services, site visits, workshop or conference attendance, and other professional development opportunities. In addition, the Researcher will be supported by regular meetings with a fellowship coordinator and a collaborative working relationship with Hand Papermaking magazine editor Mina Takahashi. One nine-month residential fellowship is available for a Native American scholar, either pre- or postdoctoral, who works in the humanities or the social sciences, or for a Native American writer with a substantial body of published work.<div><br></div><div>The Indian Arts Research Center (IARC) at the School for Advanced Research (SAR) currently offers three non-residency fellowships annually to advance the work of established and emerging Native American artists. Each fellowship includes $15,000 to provide support for artists to explore new avenues of creativity, grapple with new ideas to further advance their work, and strengthen existing talents.</div><div><br></div><div>The fellowships support diverse creative disciplines and can include sculpture, performance, basketry, painting, printmaking, digital art, mixed media, photography, pottery, writing, and film and video. SAR offers a range of public programs and welcomes visitors to the historic campus which sits on the ancestral lands of the Tewa people in O’gah’poh geh Owingeh or Santa Fe, New Mexico.

A Blade of Grass (ABoG) is an artist-led organization dedicated to nurturing socially engaged art through funding, publishing, research, and field-building initiatives. Since 2011, we have supported artists who collaborate with communities to question and reshape power, build relationships, and bring people together across social systems and institutions. In 2021, we adopted a governance model led by a paid artist board, whose members bring lived experience as socially engaged practitioners. Our programs move resources nimbly, support emerging practices, and build long-term infrastructure for relational and durational work, recognizing artists as organizers, facilitators, and cultural agents embedded in community life.

A Blade of Grass (ABoG) was founded in 2011 by Shelley Frost Rubin and Deborah Fisher to support artists as conduits for social change and to deepen understanding of socially engaged art. The organization’s work grew out of an ongoing dialogue about the importance of art to civic life, driven by the belief that creativity and art can be a shared resource that concretely and positively change lives. Over its first decade of operation, ABoG played a pivotal role in fostering dialogue, supporting artists, and amplifying socially engaged art practices.

A Blade of Grass is situated on a continuum of artist-led and social practice organizations. This current incarnation of ABoG builds on over a decade of work supporting socially engaged artists. From 2011 to 2020 ABoG supported 57 artists and collectives with project grants and commissioned artists, curators, writers, and others through publications and other public programs.

The George Bennett Fellowship, endowed by Elias B. M. Kulukundis ’55, honors Academy English instructor George Bennett by awarding a one-year fellowship to an author of outstanding promise who has not yet published a book.<div><br></div><div>The purpose of the George Bennett Fellowship is to provide time and freedom from material considerations to a person seriously contemplating or pursuing a career as a writer. It provides a stipend for one academic year, as well as housing, meals and benefits for this person and family. As Writer in Residence, the Fellow lives in Exeter and makes him- or herself and talents available in an informal way to students interested in writing. The Fellow is provided with an office in the Class of 1945 Library and is invited to give a reading of his or her work during the spring.</div>

INDEX is announcing the third open call for applications to the 2027 Victoria Amelina Fellowship Programme for non-fiction writers. Two scholarship recipients will spend January to March 2027 in Lviv, Amelina’s hometown, working on their own literary projects. The topics of their work must relate to the causes, consequences and realities of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<div><br></div><div>Safety note: Given the risks associated with Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, foreign writers who decide to travel to Ukraine assume personal responsibility for their own safety; it is recommended that they take out travel insurance. INDEX: Institute for Documentation and Exchange is a cultural and research institution created in Lviv to empower the Ukrainian intellectual vanguard and advance knowledge about Ukraine worldwide. Squeaky Wheel’s Workspace Residency supports artists and researchers working on media arts projects.<div>The short-term residency is open to applicants from Buffalo and across the United States who are seeking resources, time, and support for ongoing projects or the creation of new work.</div><div><br></div><div>Residents have tailored access to facilities, equipment, technical consultation, from Squeaky Wheel, as well as our partners Buffalo Game Space, The Foundry, Mirabo Press, and Silo City. Residents present on their work together in a public event, present a workshop for the Squeaky Wheel community, and participate in tailored activities, such as field trips, critiques, among others.</div><div><br></div><div>We aim to support our residents’ careers and continue our relationships after the residency has concluded. The Sundress Academy for the Arts (SAFTA) will offer one full fellowship given to a trans writer for a week-long farmhouse residency thanks to a generous gift from SmokeLong Quarterly. This fellowship also includes six months of SmokeLong Fitness, the community workshop of SmokeLong Quarterly, to be taken whenever the fellow has the time.<div><br></div><div>Our short-term residency bedroom is 130 sq. ft. with queen-size platform bed, closet, small dresser, and desk. The window faces the front of the house with a view of the butterfly bush in the yard. The room is painted a warm grey with original photography and art from regional artists.</div>

SmokeLong Quarterly Fellowship for Trans Writer

We are dedicated to bringing the best flash narratives to the web quarterly, whether written by widely published authors or those new to the craft. We pay $100 or $150 with audio.

The term “smoke-long” comes anecdotally from the Chinese, who noted that reading a piece of flash takes about the same length of time as smoking a cigarette. SmokeLong Quarterly does not encourage smoking.

The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers is an international fellowship program open to people whose work will benefit directly from access to the collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building—including academics, independent scholars, and creative writers (novelists, playwrights, poets). Visual artists at work on a book project are also welcome to apply. The Center appoints 15 Fellows a year for a nine-month term at the Library, from September through May. In addition to working on their own projects, the Fellows engage in an ongoing exchange of ideas within the Center and in public forums throughout the Library. Each Fellow gives a talk over lunch on his or her current work-in-progress to the other Fellows and to a wide range of invited guests, and may be asked to take part in other programs at The New York Public Library.<div><br></div><div><br></div>

New York Public Library

In 2012, The Kenyon Review welcomed the first of its KR Fellows. This initiative was inspired by the great tradition of Kenyon Review literary fellowships awarded in the 1950s to writers such as Flannery O’Connor and W.S. Merwin in their formative years. These fellowships represent a significant fulfillment of one aspect of our continuing mission: to recognize, publish, and support extraordinary authors in the early stages of their careers. We believe that after two years, these KR Fellows will be more mature and sophisticated writers, teachers, and editors. As a result, they will be extremely attractive candidates for academic positions as well as for significant publishing opportunities.<div><br></div><div>During these two years, fellows will undertake a significant writing project and teach one course per semester in the Kenyon College English Department, contingent upon departmental needs. Fellows will also assist with creative and editorial projects for The Kenyon Review. Fellows are required to live in the local community and are expected to participate in the cultural life of Kenyon College. <br><div><br></div><div>This post-graduate residential fellowship at Kenyon College offers qualified individuals time to develop as writers, teachers, and editors. The Kenyon Review was the vision of poet Roberta Teale Swartz and her husband, Gordon Keith Chalmers, who became the thirteenth president of Kenyon College in 1937. Roberta Teale Swartz, a protege and friend of Robert Frost, published two acclaimed books of poetry. She was also instrumental in recruiting John Crowe Ransom to found a literary magazine in Gambier.

From the beginning, Swartz and Chalmers had grand ambitions for The Kenyon Review, and John Crowe Ransom’s stature in the literary world gave the magazine immediate clout. The inaugural issue, published in January 1939, included work by Delmore Schwartz, Ford Madox Ford, Randall Jerrell, and Robert Lowell (then a student at Kenyon, who had transferred from Harvard to study with Ransom). During Ransom’s 21-year tenure as editor, The Kenyon Review became one of the most influential literary magazines in the English-speaking world.

The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow is located in the historic arts village of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in the Northwest corner of the Ozark Mountains.<div><br></div><div>The WCDH residency program is for writers and artists of all genres and experience levels. Residencies can be planned anywhere from three days to three months, any time of year.</div><div><br></div><div>The colony has eight individual writing suites, each with a bedroom, private bath, dedicated writing area, Wi-Fi, and coffee maker. Residents enjoy chef-prepared dinners Monday through Saturday, served family-style in our welcoming Great Room — one of the highlights of life at the Colony. A stocked kitchen is available for breakfast, lunch, and late-night snacks.</div><div><br></div>
