Starting in the late 50s, researchers associated with militaries and academic institutions around the world focused their energies on developing the very technology you’re using right this second: the Internet. For this issue of Saros, we’re interested in stories that examine the ramifications—personal, social, psychological, political—of the Internet and Internet culture. This is broad on purpose; online existence is too subjective to be anything but. Dark web urban legends, livestream parasociality, keyboard warfare, dark nights of the soul on Club Penguin, revolutionaries posting short-form content, coltan mining, consoling chatroom denizens twice your age when you should’ve been doing your homework, listservs, cryptocurrency high-control groups. Any era, any niche, as long as it’s Terminally Online.

Saros SF #7 - Terminally Online

Biotechnology touches on some of humanity’s most fundamental needs: the crops we rely on for food, materials, and fuel; biomedical interventions that determine life or death, health or illness; enzymes that produce useful chemicals or remediate toxic ones; the power to reshape ecosystems that sustain all life on Earth. It raises the promise of a world freed from hunger, disease, waste, and pollution – and the fear of engineered plagues, eugenicist quests for human augmentation, and ecological disasters. As a result, the modern life sciences have also been a locus of intense social, political, and economic contestation – over proprietary crop seeds, over access to lifesaving pharmaceuticals, over DNA-based surveillance, over limits on modifying the human genome or re-engineering species in the wild.<div><br></div><div>Biopunk (or Ribofunk, if you prefer) is a genre of science fiction that examines how corporations and other systems of power seek to control, own, and exploit biology at the molecular level, and the efforts of hackers and rebels to subvert and wrest back some of that power and control, whether for idealistic or selfish reasons. Where cyberpunk was defined by the advent of universally programmable computers, biopunk is defined by something potentially even more powerful: DNA as a programming language for physical matter and living organisms. For this issue, we encourage you to define the biopunk genre broadly. We welcome not only gritty near-future stories but also those set in distant futures defined by human or alien biotechnology, or even fantasy settings that arguably fit the theme.</div>
