Hi Annie: As I read this piece, I'm thinking of how self-consciousness relates to feeling one's power, how by syllogism (?) the male gaze might then feel like a physical 'check' on a woman's body, knocking it back 'into place.' Love how supportive this mother is as she teaches the narrator not only to draw but also to imagine the possibilities available to her. Creating 'costumes.' Personas. I'm suddenly aware of how refreshing it is to read about a good mother when so often in prose we read about bad ones. Strange. This Wonder Woman material is elegantly braided. Such a sticky point to explore: whether a sexualized body can be a powerful one. If it's feminist to believe so, what sort of feminism, etc. If it's even 'true' in practice, given the patriarchal world in which we live. Oh this is a complicated view, how narrator sees daughter. This is all handled so wonderfully: it feels honest, vulnerable, inquisitive, searching. The bookend of dancing. Terrific. Keeping all this in mind as I draw up your list. I would aim high with this. while keeping a few 'safety' options in mind. What do you think? Happy submitting! (I've also previously recommended Pangyrus but they'll be open February 15-May 15 and September 15-November 15 with a special call planned: The "I" of The Beholder. On the act of viewing. They also look for nonfiction in the category Generations: on family, parenting, etc.)
