About the workshop
In this FREE 1-hour workshop from screenwriter & story coach Lauren Veloski, have a blast exploring the screenwriting techniques and innovations employed in Greta Gerwig’s groundbreaking “BARBIE.”
Details
If you found "BARBIE" utterly-to-moderately delightful and are interested in mayyybe dipping your own toe in screenwriting (or you're already waist-deep in scene work) this 1-hour is a great primer on Lauren’s screenwriting workshops (to debut fall + winter here at Write or Die!). ZERO screenwriting experience required to join. This workshop is perfect for screenwriters of ALL levels—from vaguely curious to absolute beginners OR experienced multi-drafters. In other words: HI, BARBIE!
Workshop takeaways
Using the BARBIE movie as a damn juicy example of a perfect "alternative screenplay," gain a deeper understanding of what true "freedom on the page" looks like. For a screenwriter fully in their power, ANY constructed personality/persona becomes a secret weapon (even an offensively perfect plastic doll!) once you've deconstructed the creative machinations behind embodiment, brilliant dialogue, and fearless "play."
Additional info
• Prerequisite: Ideally, you've seen the "Barbie" movie!
• Discount for future courses: Workshop attendees will receive a discount for future Write or Die courses with Lauren Veloski.
About the instructor
Lauren Veloski is a screenwriter, comedy writer, and brave champion of the flip phone. Her first feature script, the indie comedy “SORRY, THANKS,” was praised by Lena Dunham for writing “as seamless as any studio rom-com—if studio rom-coms had astute, nuanced dialogue.” An “unromantic comedy” about the wreckage wrought by casual douchebaggery, “SORRY, THANKS” world-premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, played 15 fests internationally, and was acquired by IFC/Sundance. After 15 years as the “story brain in the room” on countless television and film projects, Lauren launched her creative coaching company, THAT’S BANANAS, in 2022. Through THAT'S BANANAS, she does what she most loves: working one-on-one with writers at all levels, helping them come into their badassery and power on the page.
