About the workshop
In this weekend intensive, we will explore worldbuilding and setting, finding strategies to improve our own writing and storytelling to make our worlds sing.
Details
While there will be many opportunities to write, you do not need to have ever written a Science Fiction or Fantasy or have previous work to benefit from this class.
During our sessions together, we will explore the following:
•the rules for worldbuilding
•how to convey information without infodumping
•how to use dialogue and description effectively
•how to incorporate all of these strategies into our writing
What you will learn
Students will learn the fundamentals of worldbuilding, and how it is used in Science Fiction and Fantasy. They will also learn how to incorporate elements of worldbuilding like cultural, language, setting, etc, into their own work.

• Rules for worldbuilding and questions to ask of your own worlds • Building descriptions to feel grounded (sensory details) • Worldbuilding without info-dumping • How to use dialogue to world build
What you will be reading
Readings will vary, but potential authors include: Octavia Butler, Ursula K. Le Guin, Becky Chambers, N.K. Jemisin, Ray Bradbury, Zoulfa Katouah, Carmen Maria Machado, and others.
About the instructor
Marissa Gallerani is a creative writer and teacher living in Providence, RI. She holds a MFA from The Newport MFA at Salve Regina University and is primarily interested in how structure enhances SFF narratives. She has taken many a workshop and detests the cone of silence and will not subject you to it. She is working on a science fantasy novel, and currently teaches at the Community Libraries of Providence and Salve Regina University.
