About
Just like the trash cat, we’re looking for treasure in unexpected places.
Like the tenacious fungi and beetles that thrive in dark, abandoned spaces.
The plant that discovers a sliver of soil in an ocean of paving slabs, then blooms.
Look at the crowded shelves of a charity shop and find an object that sings to you. Maybe it evokes a special memory. Maybe it makes you laugh. Maybe it’s haunted. You know you want it. We want it too.
We look for three key things in submissions - STORY, CHARACTER and VOICE.
We have a general call for flash fiction between 100 and 750 words, and short stories between 751 and 2000 words twice a year in Summer and Winter.
We have a call for reprints in Spring, shorts between 100 and 2000 words
We have a microfiction call during March, subs between 50 and 175 words
We have a prompted story challenge during the month of August, writing flash up to 500 words to blind-chosen prompts
We often have other pop-up themed calls - keep an eye on the calendar on our webpages
We aim to publish a charity print anthology biennially. Our first - What Comes to Light - published in September 2025 and can now be read online on our website as well as purchased, with all royalties going to The Wildlife Trusts.
NEW FOR 2027
We are launching a new space within Trash Cat Lit for short horror fiction.
The Dark Alley will seek its first submissions in April 2027.
