We are excited to read flash where every word pulls its weight; every sentence tells a story. Flash should yield quick transformations and revelations, have compelling characters, and a narrative that provokes thought with a voice that lifts us up and carries us past the last line. Experimental flash is welcomed. Stories up to 1,000 words (max 3 in one sub). For pieces over 1,000 words, we encourage you to submit via our regular fiction category.

Sub Genres: All / surprise us

Submission fee: $ 3

We want essays that get our minds working and hearts thumping and prose that is artful with voices that are clear and cadent. Whether traditional or experimental, structure and form should enhance the content of a story that is both universal and painfully specific. Essays should not exceed 5,000 words. Excerpts from memoirs may be considered but should be self-contained. For pieces under 1,000 words, we encourage you to submit via our flash nonfiction category.

Poetry

Min pieces: 1

Max pieces: 5

Submission fee: $ 3

Payment: $ 75

We are interested in work that pushes boundaries, both in content and form. Poems should emanate from textured, evocative images, use language with an awareness of how words sound and mean, and have a definite sense of voice. Each line should help carry the poem from first line to last. We are open to experimentation, traditional form, and free verse. Whatever shape it takes, we want exciting work that thinks through or challenges poetic traditions. No more than 5 poems per submission and no more than 10 pages in total.

Hybrid

Max words: 5000

Submission fee: $ 3

Payment: $25-75

If you have writing that doesn’t fit neatly into a single genre category, or was written by more than one person, you might find a good home for your work with us!

How to submit

  • Processs

    Submittable

  • Cover letter

We'd like to know a little bit about you and/or your work but do not need a formal letter. Letters are cool too, though. Really, it can be whatever you want.

  • Eligibility

    No specific eligibility requirements

  • Formatting

All pieces should be typed and paginated with one-inch margins and a 12 point serif font, preferably Times New Roman. Prose should be double spaced. For poetry: The formatting should be as desired to achieve the intended aesthetic with the understanding that longer lines and unique formatting could result in altered presentation based on the display media/window size being used. For example, long lines could wrap to a new line. We do our best with what you give us. We prefer to read blind so please remove your name from the submitted document.

  • Author's rights

The Good Life Review acquires First North American Serial Rights and the right to maintain an archive copy of work online. All other rights revert to author upon publication with a request that if the work is reprinted, appropriate acknowledgment to The Good Life Review is made.

  • Additional info

Each submissions should include work from only one genre/category (for example do not create a submission with both fiction and poetry unless it is to be considered as a hybrid piece). Please only one submission per category at a time and wait to hear back before submitting again. We pay $75 per piece for writing in our seasonal issues (beginning with issue #15 ~ Spring 2024) and $25 per piece for writing appearing in our Micro Monday segment and for book reviews. Fee: $3 for submissions to be considered for seasonal issues. There are fee-free options for marginalized groups during some portion of each reading period. There is currently no fee for submitting artwork or pieces to be considered for the “Micro Monday” segment. 100% of the work we publish is unsolicited and many of the writers are early in their writing and/or publishing journey. Further, every piece that lands in our queue is handled with care and given serious consideration and each is evaluated by at least two editors (in addition to a number of readers) on our teams. We no longer accept pieces from our University Nebraska Omaha MFA friends via Submittable. If interested, please send correspondence directly to managing editor, Tacheny, at tacheny.perry@thegoodlifereview.com.
