Poetry

Max pieces: 6

Payment: $

We publish SF/F, speculative, and slipstream poetry. We value formalism as well as experimentality, and are highly receptive to both. Poems must substantiate their forms, or their experimentations; a weak concept in rhyme is still a weak concept. Sonnet plus spaceship is not enough.

Review

Max words: 1000

Payment: $ 50

Strange Horizons publishes in-depth reviews of science fiction and fantasy works, especially books, films, and television, three times a week. Reviews normally cover new works, that is, titles published within the last year to eighteen months. We do occasional features on older works, and will not necessarily reject a review because its subject has been available for a while, but we will consider such reviews on a case-by-case basis. We're especially interested in reviews of worthwhile material that might not otherwise get the exposure it deserves; similarly, we are interested in reviews of works that push traditional genre boundaries. We prefer reviews of 1500 to 2000 words, although we have no upper word limit; a review should use as many words as necessary to say what needs to be said.

Interview

Max words: 3000

Max words: 5000

Payment: $ 45

Strange Horizons publishes interviews with notable individuals within the speculative fiction community, including but not limited to authors, editors, artists, critics, and other commentators. Should be presented in a question-and-response format, with a short biographical and contextual introduction, including the date when the interview was conducted.

Max pieces: 3

Payment: $100-200

Hard sells: cartoons/anime, line art/black and white, portraits/fan commissions, photography, collage

    Moksha

  • Cover letter

Your cover letter can be minimal: generally, these should be short and list just a few of your most recent or most relevant publications or workshops. If you've got life experience relevant to your story (e.g. your story takes place on a submarine, and you served on a submarine), please do mention that. Cover letters shouldn't include plot synopses or pitches.

  • Additional info

Special note on translations: our quarterly sister magazine Samovar specializes in translations: we encourage you to submit all translations there first. Samovar and Strange Horizons have independent submissions queues and different editors, and submissions to either magazine are only read for that magazine. We pay artists $200 for an original work to accompany a story, and $100 in the event that we use a piece from an artist's already existing portfolio. For fiction: Payment of 10¢/word USD, within 60 days of contract. We pay: $50 for a column, $40 for a reprinted essay, $150 for an original essay, $45 to an interviewer, and $45 to an interviewee. $20 to a roundtable moderator, and $20 to each other contributor We pay $50 for reviews of at least 1000 words. We want to showcase work that challenges us and delights us, by new and established writers from diverse backgrounds and with diverse concerns.
