Beggar Poet Press

Arizona-based poetry journal publishing two beautiful print issues a year and audio features on a rolling basis. We award editors' cash prizes for each issue, nominate for every prize available to us, and respond to all submissions in 30 days.

Since our re-launch in 2023, poetry published in Shō Poetry Journal has been selected for Best Spiritual Literature, Best New Poets, the Pushcart Prize, the Monarch Queer Literary Awards, and republished in Verse Daily and Poetry Daily.

Shō Poetry Journal was founded in 2002 by Sita Martin, who during her battle with terminal cancer turned to promoting the work of new poets she knew. We strive to champion voices that have been historically underrepresented or overlooked.

Payment is one contributor’s copy. US-based authors also receive a discount on the purchase of extra copies. All work accepted for publication from US residents will be considered for two editors' prizes: the Shō Poetry Prize (for a poem or group of poems in issue) and the Sita Martin Prize (for a poem or group of poems by a poem who has not yet published a full-length collection). Each winner receives $150 and a one-year subscription to Shō Poetry Journal. One runner-up in each category receives a one-year subscription to Shō Poetry Journal.
