Exposed Bone seeks uncanny fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction that destroys expectations and shoves at barriers. We encourage the sly, weird, and charming.

Exposed Bone is headed by Scum Hellebore and Shauri Cherie, two dumbasses who sold their souls to the literary journal demons in college. Note that we're committed to publishing and uplifting the voices of those from all racial and ethnic backgrounds, members of the LGBTQIA2+ community, and those from other disenfranchised or underrepresented groups. We don't fuck around with AI. If you're not alright with all that, this likely won't be your piece's home.

Our only bar is that you be over 18. That said, we do encourage and welcome submissions from all marginalized voices. The human experience is diverse; our magazine should reflect that.

Exposed Bone

We're open for any short fiction, including flash. As much as we love horror, thriller, and ghost stories, we're also a good home for heartwarming narratives, especially if they're queer or about other underrepresented groups. We probably won't be a good fit for straight-up fluff or erotica, but we'll read just about anything.

Fiction

Any and all styles of poetry. We especially like pieces that play with form. We don't usually like traditional forms or rhyme schemes, but shoot your shot anyway. There's no telling what will catch our eye.

Poetry

We welcome any and all forms of creative nonfiction. Our favorites are usually hermit crab/found form, fragmented, or braided pieces. That said, we're open to read just about anything.

Our cover should be as contributor-focused as everything in our volume, so we want someone who believes in our mag's values to be front and center with their art. We will consider up to five unpublished (5) pieces for our cover contest, and each should be sized for a 8.5 x 5.5 book.
Keep in mind that we will have our logo and the volume number at the top of the cover. So that you can create with this in mind, please make use of our overlay. However, upon submitting, do not include the overlay on your cover. The overlay is only intended to serve as a sizing guide and a means of allowing space for the Exposed Bone text. If your cover is selected, we will add in the correct overlay.
