Payment: CA$ 50 per piece

WE HAVE EXTENDED OUR DEADLINE FOR ISSUE 1 FROM MAY 10, 2024 TO JUNE 10, 2024. Please note that during this window (May 10 -June 10) we are only open to short stories that count as LITERARY FICTION, and we are especially interested in work written by people of marginalized genders and/or BIPOC writers. THE FOLLOWING WORDING IS ONLY APPLICABLE UNTIL MAY 10: "Although we primarily gravitate towards genre-defying literary fiction you wouldn't find at the airport, some particular genres nonetheless influence us. We appreciate not only stories that fit into these genres, but also less easily categorized stories that carry their traces: surrealism, magical realism, speculative fiction, slipstream, gothic, and literary horror. If you have written any anarchy-adjacent southern gothic, definitely send it along. We also have a soft spot for the comedic and the absurd."

We are not looking for writers who are specifically anarchist, and we are not looking for pieces that are simplistic renderings of capital-A Anarchism. Take a look at our influences that we list on our Moksha site - most of the writers who anchor our taste are not anarchists. Their subject matter ranges widely. These stories are not necessarily about anarchy, yet are undeniably concerned with power and transformation. UPDATE AS OF APRIL 25, 2024: We have extended our window for literary short fiction & we are seeking writing from BIPOC writers and people of marginalized genders We are extending our window from May 10 to a new deadline of June 10 in order to solicit more diverse literary fiction, and we are now specifically seeking work from under-represented writers. To date, we have received next to no literary fiction and very few stories that feature protagonists who are not white space cowboys or their equivalent. The vast majority of the short stories we have received are genre fiction. Many of those feature: - protagonists who are men - adventure plots - futuristic or dystopian settings - non-man characters, and BIPOC characters, showing up only briefly, and/or being killed off in the first few pages We are extending our submissions window to solicit more diverse and more literary stories. From May 10 until June 10, please don't send us any genre stories, or stories similar to those we just described. Send literary fiction only. We want to foster a diversity of good, complex, interesting writing that is not just about over-represented protagonists like white space cowboys. For these reasons, we strongly encourage BIPOC writers and people of marginalized genders to submit their work. The deadline extension and our expression of strong interest in writers who are BIPOC and/or of marginalized genders applies to both short fiction AND poetry. To us, literary fiction is well-crafted prose that: - incorporates stylistic devices such as imagery and figurative language - prioritizes character and character development over narrative plot - demands that the reader create meaning rather than just "get" the "message" Please acquaint yourself with our taste before submitting (see "Our Influences" and "What We're Looking For") and follow us on Instagram (@anarchistfictions) and Mastodon (@anarchistfctions@kolektiva.social) where collective members post and comment on exemplary fiction and poetry that we're reading.
