When I first realized the word ‘agender’ applied to me, that I was agender,
my biggest concern was that I was no longer a man.

I didn’t know how else to fit in the world.

When I left that unimportant man at the cafe the morning after we had sex I decided I wouldn’t be sexy anymore.

I didn't know about birds,
even in my bird phase
three years ago I didn't.
I didn't know about bird sex.

I realized I was agender in New Zealand and felt like I didn't exist

This morning, the light was queer when it hit me.
I rose and left my body.  I flew to the birds.

I was mothered by not knowing, by pain and by absence. I grew and became the dark pieces of myself, but now I know that darkness is not inherently monstrous.
