Deadbolt (excerpt)

The year I turn 9, my father hurls a telephone across the kitchen.

My dad has just received news of a friend’s death from brain cancer. I suspect he figures the receiver might as well die too, and wound the kitchen on its way out.

Pawing the Ground

Three years into our marriage, when my husband admits that he hadn’t wanted to have sex on our wedding night, I see the books. He sits framed by a wall of them, his books, my books, our books, from Allende to Woolf, lined up in the living room.

Leaving the Body

When I encounter Michael’s lookalike, for a few moments he feels a little less dead. Because sometimes, absence is loaded with presence, dripping with it.

Tedium is my tent pole. Each morning we listen to the same story, reenacting it: Jesus and his buddies eating dinner, drinking wine; Jesus pleading, Don’t forget about me.
