LIGHT SPILL

 Laura Mota-Juang is a Taiwanese-Brazilian writer, photographer, and shameless experimentalist in other mediums based in Tiohtiá:ke/Montreal. Her poetry has been published by PRISM International, carte blanche, ANMLY, and elsewhere. Her personal essays appeared at Held Magazine and Also Cool Magazine. She is the author of Light Spill (Block Party Press 2023), a chapbook inspired by Physic's imagination. Laura was a finalist QWF's carte blanche Prize in 2023.

   How can a plan for two
   be completed                  by     one?
      From here,   I     know         
           there will be no return to complicity.
  Let’s   start     over,     
               I   hear    you  or  the water crashing.

Ulcers Like Men’s Eyes

I pinch them with my nails. maliciously, the flowers ask:
Do you think we’re enough to fill your lack?
“No… You’re not enough but you’re not a filling, 
you’re a peace offering.”
I give them a compact smile. I haven’t been crying.

you find me soaking the bathroom floor.

it's scarier if I can't drown

In this language from none of my progenitors,
I hide my own voice.
and what is that? In my first year living in Canada,
I hoped for the day I could dream in this language.
Dreams, the symbol of fluency.

I proposed to myself an experiment. I wanted to try the opposite of Bei's character. I decided to go on a one-month journey searching for the answer to “How much pleasure fits in a woman's life?”

For Pleasure

She would start whispering fart, I would giggle and whisper back asshole, and we would follow with a list of bad words, laughing at each other. When we exhausted all of our vocabulary, she would scratch my back until I fell asleep...
