A nonprofit, literary publisher based in Pittsburgh, PA. We publish full-length collections of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. We accept manuscripts for our annual prizes and through our open-call reading period.

Founded in 1998, Autumn House Press is proud to have published debut collections by poets such as Ada Limón, Danusha Lameris, Eric Tran, and Cameron Barnett, and fiction writers such as Michael X. Wang and Wendy Wimmer, and nonfiction by Beth Alvarado, Dickson Lam, and Clifford Thompson. The press believes literature affirms the deep and elemental range of our human experience, and our need for it is now more crucial than ever. Autumn House is committed to championing debut, emerging, and established authors and to supporting our authors throughout their careers. We pledge to edit their work with devotion and care and to create beautiful books.

Autumn House Press is a nationally renowned nonprofit publisher based in Pittsburgh, PA, whose mission is to publish and promote poetry and other fine literature.

The press, our publications, and our authors have received a great deal of recognition and acclaim. In 2025, the Association of Writers and Writing Programs honored AHP with its Small Press Award, acknowledging the hard work, creativity, and innovation of the press and our continued high-quality work within our community; and in 2011, we earned a Certificate of Appreciation from the Pennsylvania Legislature recognizing our contribution to the arts. Our books have won numerous awards over the years: 

Love for Sale and Other Essays by Clifford Thompson won a 2013 Whiting Award, 
Anxious Attachments by Beth Alvardo won the 2020 Oregon Book Award in Creative Nonfiction, 
Further News of Defeat by Michael X. Wang won the 2021 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection and the 2022 GLCA New Writers Award, and 
Bittering the Wound by Jacqui Germain won the 2024 Kate Tufts Discovery Prize.
Additionally, Autumn House is proud to have published Lucky Wreck, the debut collection by Ada Limón, the 24th Poet Laureate of the United States.
Our books have been reviewed in well-known magazines and journals, including Publishers Weekly, People Magazine, Kirkus Reviews, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Hudson Review, The Women’s Review of Books, The Jewish Review of Books, and many more. The suggested length of the manuscript is at least 50 pages but it should not exceed should 100 pages.

General call

The Autumn House staff as well as select outsider readers serve as the preliminary readers and the final judge changes yearly. The winner receives publication of a full-length manuscript and $2,500.

Autumn House Nonfiction Prize

All fiction sub-genres (short stories, short-shorts, novellas, or novels) or any combination of sub-genres are eligible.

Autumn House Fiction Prize

The Autumn House staff and select outsider readers will serve as the preliminary readers, and the final judge changes yearly. The winner receives publication of their full-length manuscript and $2,000

Autumn House Press Rising Writer Prize

The Autumn House staff as well as select outsider readers serve as the preliminary readers, and the final judge changes yearly. The winner receives publication of a full-length manuscript and $2,500.
