A student-edited anthology of written and visual art centering Detroit and Wayne State

The Wayne Literary Review (WLR) is an annual literary journal published in Detroit, Michigan, by Wayne State Press. Established in the early 1950s, WLR has been a mainstay of campus culture for around seventy years, primarily publishing work by current students in a broad range of forms: creative nonfiction, fiction, plays, poetry, photography, and sketches. (clas.wayne.edu) The journal is edited by Wayne State University students and alumni, aiming to showcase writing that inspires, experiments, and pushes language in new and interesting directions. Each year, an Executive Student Editor is chosen to lead the editorial process. For instance, in 2020, Carrie Paveglio served as the lead editor, developing her talents as a leader and curator of art and poetry. (clas.wayne.edu) The journal accepts unsolicited submissions and simultaneous submissions, with a reading period from August 15 to February 20. They do not charge a reading fee and aim to respond to submissions in less than three months. Each issue features around 15 debut authors and is published once a year, with a circulation between 1,000 to 2,500 copies. (pw.org) The journal is particularly interested in work that challenges, grapples with, intersects, encourages, eludes, produces, and manifests the ideas of prophecy, protest, and prayer, however those three ideas may (or may not) show up in the work. (clas.wayne.edu) Submissions are accepted in various genres, including poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art, with specific guidelines provided on their website. (wlr.weebly.com) The journal's mission is to uplift the literary voices of Wayne State University students and members of the surrounding Detroit community, reflecting the diversity, resilience, and creativity that make WSU and Detroit special.
