Under a Warm Green Linden launched in 2008. The title alludes to an image from Pier Paolo Pasolini’s "The Day of My Death," chosen for its balancing the terrors of being with the promise of renewal. In 2015 we expanded, becoming Green Linden Press, a nonprofit publisher of books, chapbooks, and broadsides. Our publications include the Green Linden Chapbook Series, the Essential Voices Anthology Series, and two annual book contests: The Wishing Jewel Prize awarded for poetic innovation, and the Stephen Mitchell Prize for excellence in translation. Our green mission has us give a portion of proceeds for reforestation. In addition to being available on our website, our titles are distributed to the trade by Asterism Books.

The Essential Voices Editorial Fellowship

The Wishing Jewel Prize honors an innovative manuscript that challenges expectations of genre, form, or mode while engaging the rich possibilities of lyrical expression. Named for an essay in Anne Carson's innovative book Plainwater, we look forward to work that questions the boundaries of what poems and books can be. Note: All manuscripts are considered for publication, even those that don’t aim to “push the envelope,” so this is both a contest for the most innovative manuscript and an open-reading period. 
 

  Contest awards $1000 and publication.
  All finalists considered for publication. 
  We welcome simultaneous submissions, multiple submissions, co-authored manuscripts, and manuscripts in translation. 
  Send an unpublished manuscript (48 pages minimum) with identifying information removed. 
  Because we agree with Mahmoud Darwish that poetry changes the poet, we are not interested in submissions generated, full or in part, by artificial intelligence.  
  If your work includes non-textual components, these may be included in the manuscript (preferred) or attached separately. 
  Include an acknowledgments page indicating any poems, writings, art, etc. that has been previously published.
  Include a brief biographical statement in the space below. If you are uploading more than one file, please explain their relationship, sequence, etc. You may also describe your manuscript / project if you would like. 
  The reading fee is necessary because it helps fund the publication of our books. There are three options: (1) general reading fee, (2) general reading fee and a discounted book—note: we are not offering this for international submitters—, and (3) a discounted rate for students and those experiencing financial difficulty.
  Green Linden Press intends to publish one or more manuscripts from this contest; however, we reserve the right to publish no manuscripts if we feel that none fit our aesthetic.

The Stephen Mitchell Prize for Translation

   Stephen Mitchell has written or translated over twenty books. He has brought into English lucid, beautiful translations of Yehuda Amichai, Homer, Pablo Neruda, Rainer Maria Rilke, and such foundational texts as the Tao Te Ching, Gilgamesh, and Genesis, among others. In honor of Mitchell’s linguistic and poetic acumen, Green Linden Press will award the Prize for an unpublished book-length manuscript in any literary genre translated from any language into English.

  Contest awards $1000 and publication.
  All finalists considered for publication.
  We welcome simultaneous submissions, multiple submissions, and co-translated manuscripts.
  Send an unpublished manuscript of at least 48 pages in any literary genre translated from any language into English. 
  Include an acknowledgments page indicating translations that have been previously published.
  Include a cover letter with a short biographical statement for the author and translator(s). 
  Also, please briefly describe the merit of the work you are submitting: Why is it important that these translations be available to an English-reading audience? If the author's work has been previously translated into English, what makes this manuscript distinct and necessary?
  When submitting your manuscript, you will be asked to indicate your relationship to the translation rights. Please indicate if the work is in the public domain or who holds the translation rights. If you have been granted permission by the author or the rights holder, please indicate this.
  If your manuscript is not bilingual (i.e., it is in translation only), you will be asked to provide a bilingual supplement of three or more pages—a sample of your translations alongside the original text.

The Stephen Mitchell Translation Prize

Under a Warm Green Linden publishes reviews of poetry and interviews with established and emerging poets that deepen, illuminate, and complicate an understanding of their work. We are interested in excellent poetry of all subjects and styles by a diversity of authors.
•   We prefer reviews of forthcoming or recently published books of poetry or older books that warrant being newly considered.
•   We prefer interviews and reviews that are at least 800 words.
•   We do not consider reviews of self-published books or books of genres other than poetry.
•   Reviewers and interviewers of accepted pieces will be featured in our contributors section.
•   Simultaneous submissions are allowed but discouraged; we respond within three weeks.
•   Please note that this call for reviews and interviews is not a request to send manuscripts for us to review.

Green Linden Press is delighted to welcome submissions of poetry chapbook manuscripts to be considered for publication in its Chapbook Series. Our mission is simple: to foster excellent poetry. Poets are encouraged to read our online journal, Under a Warm Green Linden, and the titles in our catalog to become familiar with work that excites us.    

  Send an unpublished manuscript from 12–45 pages (either pdf, doc, or docx).
  Include a brief biographical statement in the space provided below.
  Include an acknowledgments page indicating poems that have been previously published, if applicable.
  Simultaneous submissions are allowed.
  Multiple submissions are permissible.
  Co-authored manuscripts are welcome.
  Manuscripts in translation are welcome.
  There are two reading fee options: $15 to have your manuscript considered; $23 to have your manuscript considered and to have a chapbook or broadside of your choosing mailed to you, shipping included (not available to international submitters). 
  Notification will be made on or before summer solstice. Chapbook publication will be in the fall or winter.
  Should your manuscript be selected, you will receive 25 copies, and your book will be promoted online and at book festivals.
  This is not a contest. Manuscripts will not be read blind. Publication decisions will be made by Christopher Nelson, the editor of Green Linden Press.

Poetry Chapbook

The Essential Voices anthology series intends to make less insular the various poetries of the world and to bridge readers to cultures misunderstood and under- or misrepresented. It has at its heart the ancient idea that poetry can unite us by revealing our shared humanity. This anthology, the third in the series, will feature new or recent poetry by living Indigenous U.S. poets. While this anthology focuses on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, we will also consider poems that touch on themes of grief, survivance, memory, and rematriation.
