We're looking for a writer who is fairly familiar with the climbing in Joshua Tree National Park for a Vertical Times assignment. The better you know the area, the better a fit you'll be.<div><br></div><div>Deadline estimated for 9/11/26 due to fast turnaround. </div>

Joshua Tree National Park Pitch

We're looking for a couple more books to review in Issue 17. The book must have been published within the last 6 months or so. Its also easier to accept a pitch if you've already read it and can tell us you definitely liked it—we wouldn't want to assign a review of a book that ends up bad.

Book Review Pitch

Issue 17 will focus on Variety. Your prototypical backpacking trip isn’t the only way to sleep in the dirt. Bikepacking, rafting, and others can all get us the same feeling of traveling by our own power, being self-sufficient, and sleeping under the stars. But there are still other ways to explore the outdoors. For this issue, explore the creative, unique, and interesting ways people are adventuring. We actually have Issue 17 mostly locked down at this point, but we may have space for another feature or two if its a really good fit. Otherwise, turn your focus to Issue 18.

Issue 17

Issue 18's thread is Adaptation. Backpackers are some of the best at adapting to the given situation. Whether its gear breaking down, the weather turning, or not getting the permit we’d hoped for, we need to be flexible, think on our toes, and adjust to the real world. For this issue, we’re looking for stories about adventurers adapting to their situation, species adapting to a changing world, brands adapting their gear to changing trends, and more. Explore the transformation and adjustment inherent in your stories. Issue 18 is pretty much wide open. We'd love to get some feature pitches that have a strong connection to the thread—pitch away!
