The Parlor is an independent magazine built on a simple belief: that the people most affected by power are the most qualified to describe it.

We report from the ground up. Our journalists are embedded in the communities they cover — not parachuted in. We publish the Puerto Rican organizer fighting colonial development, the Kashmiri reporter covering what mainstream media won't, the Aboriginal diaspora writer connecting local land struggle to global patterns of extraction. We don't treat these as separate regional stories. We understand them as different fronts of the same fight.

We also believe that data and testimony belong together. Our reporting follows the evidence. Our magazine carries the human interior of what that evidence means — the poem written from a tent in Gaza, the essay about what it costs to cross a border, the personal narrative that no institutional framework can fully contain.

The Parlor exists because the stories that matter most are rarely the ones that get told — and because the people living those stories deserve a publication that takes their analysis of their own lives seriously, not just their suffering.

We are nonprofit, independent, and accountable to no advertiser, no algorithm, and no imperial center.

The Parlor Magazine

Reported essays, personal essays, hybrid essays, and works of creative nonfiction that engage with the issue theme. We are drawn to writing that takes risks — with form, with argument, with vulnerability. International submissions welcomed.

The World We're Building

A sequence of images that tells a story — documentary, artistic, intimate, or investigative. We are looking for work that sees what others miss. A short artist statement of 200–400 words must accompany all photo essay submissions.

The cover of The Parlor is its face to the world. We are looking for an original illustration that responds to the theme — bold, political, tender, or strange. The winning work appears on the cover of Issue 2 and is credited prominently throughout.
