The New York Times launched a newsletter this summer in Minneapolis-St. Paul as a pilot for a new local journalism initiative. We are now expanding, and seeking to hire two entrepreneurial, digital-savvy journalists in Phoenix.<div><br></div><div>In this role, you will serve as host or contributor to The Local: Phoenix, a blend of essential and delightful information designed to make readers more connected to their community and more conversant around the news. The newsletter will be a bridge connecting Nashville to the full breadth of The Times and Games, Wirecutter, NYT Cooking and The Athletic. It will showcase high-quality independent journalism from local sources, and partner with Nashville news organizations.</div><div><br></div><div>You will help Phoenix natives and newcomers alike understand the forces driving change around them. You will introduce audiences to interesting characters and places; moderate and drive conversation; curate the best locally relevant content from a wide range of sources; and build relationships with readers through callouts, social media and in-person events.</div><div><br></div><div>Candidates should be deeply rooted in Phoenix and have significant experience covering the area, whether in news, politics, business, sports, culture or some combination. You must have a clear understanding of what makes their region tick as well as its media ecosystem and audience needs. You do not, however, need a traditional newspaper background — we are interested in storytellers fluent in a variety of forms and platforms. Experience as a “host” — of a podcast, newsletter, video series or live events — is a plus.</div><div><br></div><div>The reporters will work in Phoenix and be part of the newsletter team. Please submit resume, cover letter and about six work samples of any format — for example, newsletters, videos or traditional clips.</div>

When submitting your essay:

Explain the professional or personal background that connects you to the argument or idea in your essay.
Include sources (in hyperlinks in the text or in parentheses) for key assertions made in your essay.
A member of our staff will read and review every submission, but because of the large number of messages we receive, we may not be able to respond to everyone individually. Unfortunately, we have to reject many excellent essays and ideas. If you do not hear from us within three business days, you should feel free to submit your work elsewhere.

Opinion Guest Essays

We seek true stories on finding love, losing love and trying to keep love alive. We welcome essays that explore subjects such as adoption, polyamory, technology, race and friendship — anything that could reasonably fit under the heading “Modern Love.” Ideally, essays should spring from some central dilemma you have faced. It is helpful, but not essential, for the situation to reflect what is happening in the world now.

Send submissions to: modernlove@nytimes.com. Please put the subject of your essay or a possible title in the email subject line.

Limit your essay to 1,500-1,700 words.

Attach your essay as a Microsoft Word-compatible doc and paste the text into the body of the email. If your first submission is incomplete, please resubmit one complete entry; do not submit just the missing pieces in additional emails.

Essays must be entirely true. Do not use pseudonyms (including for yourself), composite characters or invented situations or scenes. There are no exceptions to this rule
