Global network supporting investigative journalism training and resources. Accepts pitches for reporting guides, toolkits, and features for journalists worldwide.

The Global Investigative Journalism Network serves as the international hub for the world’s investigative reporters. Our core mission is to support and strengthen investigative journalism around the world—with special attention to those from repressive regimes and marginalized communities. At the heart of GIJN is an international association of nonprofit journalism organizations. From its founding in 2003, GIJN has grown to include 266 member groups in 95 countries. Today, with a staff based in more than 20 countries, GIJN works in a dozen languages to link together the world’s most enterprising journalists, giving them the tools, technology, and training to go after abuses of power and lack of accountability

Every two years, GIJN holds the Global Investigative Journalism Conference, which has brought together more than 8,000 journalists from 140 countries since 2001. During this conference, it also awards the coveted Global Shining Light Awards, given to journalists in developing or transitioning countries for outstanding investigative journalism under threat or duress.

GIJN runs multilingual publishing and social media feeds on 20 platforms in 12 languages, featuring trends, events, news and techniques, and its free online Resource Center is used by journalists in 100 countries per day in 14 languages (English, Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Bangla, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Urdu). Since its set up in 2012, the GIJN Help Desk has also responded to over 15,000 requests for assistance from around the world.

GIJN is a registered U.S. nonprofit corporation, which receives grants from such donors as well as donations from individuals. These funds support our work training and networking the world's investigative journalists to report and collaborate on corruption, lack of accountability and abuses of power.

The Global Investigative Journalism Network

The Global Investigative Journalism Network publishes articles about the practice of investigative journalism around the world. We’re always on the lookout for contributors interested in writing about the craft of muckraking — nuts and bolts of the practice including tips, tools, strategies, and case studies, as well as about innovation and new models in journalism.<div><br></div><div>Our contributors have expertise in investigative journalism and other related specialized areas relevant to investigative journalism and include journalists, academics, media trainers, and those in GIJN member groups. Our stories generally run from 800 – 1,500 words, our pay is competitive, and is dependent on specialization and experience.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Our Sweet Spot</b></div><div>We love case studies that help our readers from around the world — journalists, investigative journalists, journalism students, and those in civil society and nonprofits involved in democracy, freedom of expression, and anti-corruption work — to better understand investigative topics and methods. We also publish profiles of investigative journalism groups — and sometimes of people — that help us learn more about how muckrakers are globally digging in and surviving. We’re also quite fond of data journalism and data visualization, cutting-edge tools and techniques, and sustainability issues, as well as how to craft a captivating digital story or write a beautiful narrative.</div><div><br></div><div>Our sweet spot hits the basic mechanics of investigations, including best practices in online searches, following money and decision-making, backgrounding powerful institutions, and navigating complex records. A good Q&amp;A, say with an investigative journalist doing interesting and innovative stories, would be well-received. The clever and innovative use of multimedia, online design, collaboration, and undercover reporting would also find a ready audience. And stories of our colleagues fighting the good fight around the world — Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and beyond — are particularly apropos.</div><div><br></div><div>If you’re wondering about how we define investigative reporting, check out our story and video on the topic.</div>
