Colosseum Journal Essay and Book Review Submissions

The Colosseum is looking for new, intelligent, and inspired work in verse that engages the Catholic intellectual and literary tradition or which otherwise indicates a seriousness of aesthetic form and intellectual purpose. Please submit up to five (5) poems for consideration in a single file.  Our style guide states that all poems in meter should begin each new verse line with a majuscule (but we are willing to discuss on a case-by-case basis). Please send your work as a Microsoft Word file and include a one-sentence author biography at the conclusion of your manuscript that uses something like the following structure: "Ms. Bogan serves as the poetry editor of The New Yorker" or "Mr. Frost's most recent book of verse is 'New Hampshire.'"

Guidelines for Author Manuscript Submission
Colosseum Books is an imprint of Franciscan University Press dedicated to publishing new works of poetry and criticism that show a serious attention to aesthetic (and prosodic) form and display intellectual and spiritual ambition. We published only one or two books annually and are primarily interested in new volumes of poetry that are at once contemporary and deeply engaged with the broader western and Catholic literary tradition. We also publish works of criticism that explore the craft of poetry and also its relation to the great questions that shape human life.
Most Colosseum Books are commissioned directly by the editor.
We are, however, open to consider unsolicited work between July and August each year (manuscripts received outside of that window will not be reviewed). Submissions outside that window will not be considered. Poetry manuscripts should normally be between 50 and 150 pages. Volumes of criticism should normally run from 100 to 200 pages.
