A literary journal for undergraduate students; we push to share the creative work of those that have previously been published, and those who have never been published. 

“Short Vine is a literary journal dedicated to sharing creative works of all genres from undergraduate students. We were founded by Katie Hartsock in 2003. Our first edition came out in 2003 and is still published by undergraduates at UC today. While we originally started as a student-run organization, we are now run by the Creative Writing and Literary Publishing class at UC.

Because we value diversity and inclusion, we encourage undergraduate authors of all backgrounds to submit to our journal. Any authors who identify and/or belong to historically marginalized and underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to submit. Whether you are an established writer or it’s your first time submitting to a journal, we would love to hear from you.” 

Short Vine Literary Journal

We are looking for evocative writing that lingers in our minds. We want you to be as creative or as expressive as you want, but the most important requirement is that your voice and perspective are authentic. We are looking primarily for theme submissions, but our submissions are not limited by archetype or genre. General submissions will still be accepted.<div><br></div><div>At this time, we are NOT accepting any fiction written using generative A.I. in any way.</div><div><br></div><div>Please refrain from using Grammarly and other grammar checking services. This is to ensure no works will be incorrectly flagged.</div><div><br></div><div>Please do NOT submit excerpts from novels or manuscripts. Stand alone pieces only. </div><div><br></div><div>Submissions should be sent as Word documents (.docx). 12 point font, Times New Roman, double spaced (unless formatting is paramount to your story).</div><div><br></div><div>We accept flash fiction as short as 100 words and short stories up to ~3500 words.</div><div><br></div><div>No more than two submissions per person. These will be judged individually.</div><div><br></div><div>Content warnings are not required when submitting. If you prefer to include them, you may, but we reserve the right to decide if any of the warnings are published.</div><div><br></div><div>We encourage work experimenting with hybrid or other forms, please send it in the form/structure that suits the intentionality of the work. </div><div><br></div><div>We do not accept previously published work from another journal or magazine. Personal social media, portfolios, or websites are acceptable.</div><div><br></div><div>We allow simultaneous submissions, but please let us know immediately if your piece is accepted elsewhere. </div><div><br></div><div>Please include a cover letter and short author bio (less than 100 words) in Subfolio.</div>

Peripheral Vision

Poetry is meant to be peripheral to the rules of traditional styles of literature. We are looking for poems that experiment with style, form, and structure while weaving the content of the theme along with poetic devices. Whether your piece is themed or not, we hope to see poetry that will stay with our readers once they close the journal.  <div><br></div><div>We are NOT open to AI for generation or writing purposes. </div><div><br></div><div>Please don’t utilize Grammarly or any other grammar checking services to avoid your piece getting flagged as AI</div><div><br></div><div>Five poem limit per submission, all in one document.</div><div><br></div><div>One submission per author. On- and off-theme submissions should be submitted in the same document with indication.</div><div><br></div><div>No poems longer than two pages.</div><div><br></div><div>Submissions must be sent as Word documents through our Subfolio.</div><div><br></div><div>Format: 12-point font, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, single spaced</div><div><br></div><div>We allow simultaneous submissions, but please let us know immediately if your piece is accepted elsewhere. Creative non-fiction allows us to see the meaningful nature of real life, the beauty of atoms. We ask you to engage with the reality of the unseen. What do our eyes miss and why? Whether it’s a themed piece or general submission, we are open to all writing styles. Themed submissions are encouraged for nonfiction, but general submissions are more than welcome. <div><br></div><div>At this time, we are NOT accepting any work written using A.I in any way. This includes Grammarly and other platforms such as this.</div><div><br></div><div>We welcome academic essays and literary criticisms, but we will not accept translations.</div><div><br></div><div>We will accept previously uncurated work– whether that is an essay gaining dust in the depths of your writing platform or if you have a post on a social media platform.</div><div><br></div><div>We allow simultaneous submissions, but please let us know immediately if your piece is accepted elsewhere.</div><div><br></div><div>Up to two non-fiction works can be submitted at a time, with a word limit of approximately 2,500 words. </div><div><br></div><div>Format: Page-numbered, double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins. We are open to discussions with submitters who wish to use non-traditional formats in a creative and purposeful way.</div><div><br></div><div>In the Subfolio form you can provide content warnings to your work if you believe they are necessary. We welcome work that challenges us and to that end ask submitters to use discretion when including appropriate content warnings.
