An award-wininng innovator in media: non profit, paywall-free, reader-supported, built on the efforts of journalists, progressive researchers and activists, artists and technology innovators across Canada.

An essential part of a balanced media diet, rabble.ca is the go-to site for progressive journalism and dialogue about national politics and social movements.

We are an award-winning, independent, community-driven media. Among the first digital journalism organizations in Canada, and the first to incorporate as non-profit, rabble.ca has been at the forefront of reporting on national politics with a progressive lens that centres issues of social movements, of labour, and of grassroots activism.

We began as a vision of journalists, writers, artists, activists and tech leaders across the country. They saw, first hand, the need for broader reporting on stories from civil society. In the early days, before big tech exploded on the media scene, we pioneered the place of technology in journalism – from our podcast network (ahead of iTunes!), to our early explorations of the use of live video to, for example, stream activism live from the streets across the county. In fact you can explore this history, and more, in our annual reports or in Everything On the Line: 20 years of social movement stories from rabble.ca, published in 2021 by Between the Lines.

Over the years rabble has brought labour journalism back to Canada, introduced a parliamentary reporter to progressive, non profit media and provided training to generations of journalists through internships and fellowships.

rabble is community-driven media. We exist thanks to the support of thousands of individual donors, forward-thinking organizations, In Cahoots advertisers, and grants. We invite you to be part of that legacy, and future by becoming a monthly donor – or by chipping in with a one-time donation.

Long-form Pieces

We ask that news pieces be 800 words or shorter. If a news story is too complex for that length, please consider whether it could be presented as two pieces or a series of pieces with sharper focus.<div><br></div><div>To be easily read, online writing requires shorter sentences and a shorter length overall. The 800-word length of our stories makes the finished piece more readable online, and also allows rabble.ca to present more articles, which together create a cohesive and nuanced view that incorporates a number of voices on any particular issue.</div><div><br></div><div>What is rabble.ca looking for in a pitch for a news story?</div><div><br></div><div><ul><li>Focus: Tell us what your story is in 200 words or less.</li><li>Relevance: Why does rabble.ca need to tell your story now? </li><li>Timing: If you are writing about a particular action, tell us when it is.
