A new literary magazine for our time: POTATO EATERS.

Throughout the 20th century, philosophers debated whether the realist or the avant-garde art movements of their time were more adept at depicting the struggles of the modern subject living under conditions of war, famine, industrialization, and imperialism.

To honor this debate, we have chosen the name “Potato Eaters” after the intriguing Vincent Van Gogh painting to title this magazine. It represents the intersection between the realist works of Millet and Breton that influenced Van Gogh and his own unique style which would later develop. It also reminds us of times of economic depression, poverty, and the way most humans have had to feed themselves for the majority of our existence — with vegetables that can grow in diverse climates and cuts of animal meat discarded by aristocrats.

At a time when reality is distorted by artificial intelligence, addictive short-form content, anti-woke propaganda, and widespread austerity for the arts, our main goal is to provide a space for poets and readers to break out from the rules imposed by the culture industry and remind one another of the things that really matter — the rights to food and water, freedom, equality, and a dignified life.

The goal of this magazine is to cast fresh glances on the loss of language to describe the predicaments of the masses; finding responses in newfound ways to describe the social, material, and psychic developments of the increasingly precarious political conditions in so-called Canada, the West writ large, and its imperial connections to the rest of the world. We’re creating an open forum for social realists and avant-gardists alike to paint their picture of our fracturing world, opening portals to truth, despair, and hope alike.
