Dance

the gift of a memory that doesn’t exist

nine years and two months—give or take—
before i was born, my mother stands 
with the father of her first child 
in front of a powder blue retrovan (before it was retro)

the gift of a memory that doesn't exist

i am made comfortable

with a little bit of grime, dirt under the nails, 
though not enough to be felt. the walls turned 
green with sickly ivy, a dusty horizon overtop 
the buildings, the smell of salt in the air 

meaning freedom, or else escape

August slips past without a word, bringing a faint 
whisper of what’s to come. The way regret settles in 
halfway through the inciting moment, seeping the joy 
out of impulse, tensing the muscles in preparation
