Wove Publishing

Lore Lorn publishes work rooted in oral tradition: folktales, family legends, ghost stories, urban legends, myths, superstitions, tall tales, and original contemporary lore.

Lore Lorn is a new literary magazine for tales.

We publish creative work on folklore, legends, ghost stories, family stories, local stories, myths, superstitions, tall tales, origin stories, and new work that draws from oral storytelling traditions.

The magazine came out of a simple interest in the kinds of stories we used to sit around a bonfire listening to at night, or the ones our older siblings told us to creep us out. Some are inherited, some belong to a particular town, family, or community or time period. Some are completely made up but still have that quality of a story that could be passed on.

We are especially interested in work that looks like it should be told by mouth rather than just written. That does not mean a piece has to be old, traditional, or based on existing folklore. Writers are welcome to invent their own tales if they so please.

What we are not looking for is conventional short fiction with a mythological element added to it.

Lore Lorn exists for stories that sit closer to folklore, oral tradition, and the tale than to the modern short story.

If it feel like something you could tell on a bonfire night, then we'd love it.</div><div><br></div><div>We’re less interested in conventional short fiction with a folklore element added on afterwards. Please don’t send work that relies mainly on fantasy worldbuilding, generic stories with a sprinkle of horror, or fan fiction.</div>

Art: LONG NIGHTS

Send us spoken-word poetry, oral storytelling, dramatic readings, audio essays, sound pieces, recorded folklore, or other work where the voice is part of the telling. We want pieces rooted in myth, lore, memory, family stories, local legends, superstition, oral tradition, the story your grandma told you about why you shouldn't look under tables, and stories that change a little each time they are told.<div><br></div><div>The recording does not need to sound like it came from a professional studio. A clear voice and a compelling piece is what we are after. Music and sound design are welcome where they serve the work.</div><div><br></div><div>Our winter 2026 theme is <i><b> LONG NIGHTS.</b></i></div><div><br></div><div>Please only submit audio you have the rights to use, including any music or sampled material.</div>

For <b>LONG NIGHTS</b>, we’re looking for nonfiction about what happens after dark: winter customs, night rituals, ghost beliefs, vigils, superstition, isolation, fear, sleep, mourning, celebration, and the stories people have used and still use to make sense of darkness.<div><br></div><div>We welcome personal essays, cultural criticism, literary essays, field notes, and researched nonfiction. Your piece might examine a tradition, a place, a belief, a historical practice, or something someone lived and remembered. The night can be literal or otherwise; we’re interested in what happens when daylight recedes.</div>
