Our free online literary journal houses poems, mixtapes, interviews, essays, art & stories that explore fan culture, & its various interactions with the larger cultural industry. Our biennial issues are gorgeously-crafted, limited edition keepsakes, devoted to unraveling genres & concepts colouring popular & peripheral discourses. Our live & online gatherings perform canon & its subversions, lores & folklores.

We are devoted to celebrating fan cultures, sharp-eyed & open-mouthed.

You are welcome to submit works across genres — the only requirement is for them to be inspired / engaging with some kind of “canon” (define that as you like).

Fan Media

How has social media changed the landscape of fandoms? How has it changed the way you connect and communicate with your co-fans? In which ways do SMAU speak to technologies and desires? How does it test the limits of interaction between the aspired and the aspiring? Is there a right way to be a fan; what constitutes a wrong way? What kinds of opportunities, and obstacles, are presented by this form, and in what ways do you see it evolving into the future?

As a Columnist, you pick a fandom / artefact that excites you, &amp; then write in conversation with its canon. This could range from 50s cinema to Aretha Franklin’s oeuvre to the brushstrokes of Dalí to a single poem by Tagore. Anything goes — as long as it inspires you, &amp; leaves us wanting for more.<div><br></div><div>Since our inception, we have developed numerous columns. Currently, we are also looking for writers who would like to step in to revive an extant column: Unimatrix Zero.</div><div><br></div><div>This is a voluntary position. Therefore, we make no demands on your time. We create this space in collaboration with you — hence, there is no fixed timeline from our end. You are welcome to write as frequently as you wish, once a week to once a year. We don’t mind.</div>

Columnist

As Brand Manager, you work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to shape how Headcanon Magazine looks, sounds, &amp; feels — across our editorial work, social media, events, &amp; everything in between. This might mean curating visual media, tapping into online conversations, or finding new ways to extend Headcanon’s ideas across platforms. You help translate the magazine’s ideas into a cohesive brand presence, working to ensure that what we put out feels distinctly Headcanon.<div><br></div><div>This is a voluntary position. Therefore, there is no set number of deliverables. We’re looking for someone invested in fan culture, excited by the prospect of directing Headcanon’s position within these contexts &amp; conversations.</div>

Brand Manager

As Interview Correspondent, you help us find &amp; speak with fan creators whose work moves through popular &amp; peripheral cultures — fan page owners, fic writers, zine makers, &amp; others whose practices make visible the care, imagination, &amp; labour of fandom. You pitch potential interviewees to the Editor-in-Chief, develop &amp; revise interview questions, &amp; correspond with interviewees to shape conversations that are thoughtful, polished, &amp; insightful.<div><br></div><div>This is a voluntary position. Therefore, there is no set number of pitches or interviews. We’re looking for someone who admires fan labour just as much as we do, &amp; who is delighted by the prospect of spotlighting the people, practices, &amp; communities that make these cultures possible.</div>
