Small press publishing poetry chapbooks and collections with innovative design elements.

Gunpowder Press was founded in 2013 by David Starkey. Chryss Yost joined the press as an author in 2014 and as co-editor in 2015. Both David and Chryss have served as Santa Barbara’s Poet Laureate.

In 2024, we established Gunpowder Poetry, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit literary organization, created a Board of Directors, and began receiving financial support from individuals and foundations. As Gunpowder Poetry grows, Gunpowder Press remains small but vibrant, fully committed to every book we publish.

Gunpowder Press’s first book was Tarnation of Faust by David Case, a gifted poet who died unexpectedly in 2011 at the age of 49. Wry, erudite, haunted, he produced a body of work that deserves the broadest possible readership.
