Since its inception in 1994, Fourteen Hills has contributed to a vibrant literary tradition on the West Coast centered in the San Francisco Bay Area. As an international literary magazine, Fourteen Hills has developed a reading audience that goes beyond the San Francisco Bay Area to the international community.

Fourteen Hills is a graduate student-run and award-winning literary magazine that has been a vital part of the Bay Area literary community and beyond. We strive to publish work that pushes boundaries, challenges conventions, and subverts entrenched narratives. Since our inception in 1994, we have featured both emerging and established authors including Tommy Orange, Angie Cruz, Brenda Hillman, Noah Eli Gordon, Victoria Chang, Bob Hicok, and Mary Gaitskill. Works published in Fourteen Hills have been selected for the O’Henry Prize, Pushcart Prize Special Mentions, the Best American Poetry Prize Anthology, Best American Short Stories, and more.

General call

Creative nonfiction submissions should be 1 piece of long-form creative nonfiction (maximum 20 pages/6000 words, though our sweet spot is 2,000-4,000 words) or up to 3 flash/lyrical pieces (up to 1,000 words each).<div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Submission file(s) must be in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format (Microsoft Word, Open Office, or Pages).</div><div>Cover letter section should include contact information, a third-person author biography (3–5 sentences in length), and any other relevant information.</div><div>If you have questions about the status of your submission or subscription, please contact us at hills@sfsu.edu.</div><div><br></div>

Visual art submissions may be up to 10 pieces of visual art. A series is welcome, but not required. <div><br></div><div>Please label each image with your last name. If your name is not attached to the downloaded files, it is immensely difficult to keep track of and manage your valuable submissions.  We want to see your work and give it the attention it deserves.</div><div>Cover letter section should include contact information, a third-person author biography (3–5 sentences in length), and an image list including titles, art medium, size, and the year it was made.
