Flying Island is the Online Literary Journal of the Indiana Writers Center, accepting submissions from Midwest residents and those with significant ties to the Midwest.

Flying Island is the online literary journal of the Indiana Writers Center, dedicated to showcasing the literary talents of Midwest residents and those with significant ties to the region. Established in January 2014, the journal accepts submissions in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, with specific guidelines for each genre. Fiction submissions can be up to 5,000 words, nonfiction up to 3,500 words, and poetry up to three poems, each no more than 50 lines. The journal publishes new editions on the last Friday of every month, featuring a selection of four to eight new pieces. Submissions are accepted exclusively through the Submittable platform, with a small fee to cover processing costs. Flying Island nominates works for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net, highlighting the quality and impact of the pieces it publishes. The journal is managed by a dedicated team, including Hiromi Yoshida as Poetry Editor, Michael Gawdzik as Creative Nonfiction Editor, and David M. Hassler as Fiction Editor. The Indiana Writers Center, which oversees Flying Island, is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting writers and fostering a vibrant literary community in Indiana. Through its online presence, Flying Island provides a platform for emerging and established writers to share their work, engage with readers, and contribute to the rich literary landscape of the Midwest. The journal's commitment to quality and community engagement makes it a valuable resource for both writers and readers interested in the diverse voices of the region.
