Dolls were a poor substitute for my imaginary friends. I was too old for both, but dolls were a forced habit through my ninth grade. They were the ones with the big heads and eyes, and clasp-on feet. I played with my cousin. We never giggled when we used the shoes from a fairer-skinned doll on a darker-skinned tone. We used fine-tipped Sharpies to draw tattoes on ankles, stomachs, backs. Little squiggles resembling our zodiac sign because when we weren't playing dolls, we were reading our horoscope. Putting our real lives together as best we could; watching as our dolls acted them out for us.
